Presidential debate 2012 part III : Down in the catacombs of C.G. Jung’s collective unconscious

Thanks to the very unassuming moderation of Mr. Schieffer,  the Monday presidential debate was civilized and pleasant. How boring. Who won? Let’s look in the catacombs of C.G. Jung’s collective unconscious.

As debates has become more ritualized over the decades, journalists (particular from CNN) have begun to sound like art or sport critics. Contests are analyzed on aesthetic or numerical grounds almost as though they are movies or football games.

Third presidential’s debate split/smoke screen – The Romney/Obama Siamese twin show

A consensus emerged among the critics about Mondays debate: The foreign policy debate is a flop: Romney/Obama Siamese twins. The problem with treating politics as stagecraft, particularly this election, is that it mistakes the policies for the play and confuses theater with politics. Maybe not. Theater should provide entertainment, politicians should provide leadership. And it’s at this psychological level that this campaign is singularly confusing. Down in the catacombs of C.G. Jung’s collective unconscious where elections really occur, where the commenters don’t reach, and where the polls can barely penetrate, a mythological struggle is unfolding between two profoundly different archetypal figures: a lost boy who grew up with questions of identity, and a favorite son. Barack Obama, a lonely meritocratic smooth talker and Mitt Romney, from a family of pioneers. They’re even further divided by what they have in common. Both are outsiders, one because of the color of his skin, one because of the nature of his Mormon faith. One is caught in a politically (correct) suitable social worker language, the other in a CEO lingo.

    Mirror worlds

Both candidates are campaigning in mirror worlds. Obama’s followers (also in Europe) have euphoric tendencies and a proven tolerance for paradox. The idea of “soft power” (killing by drones) makes sense to them, as does the notion that going into debt helps lift a sinking economy. Romney’s vision is a binder of women and balanced checking account, strictly suppressing his faith or any transcendent thought. In C.G. Jung’s Four Functions of Personality Obama is intuitive thinking and extrovert, Romney extrovert and sensing, and their contest strikes us as garbled and annoying because they create dissonances of a Mars and Venus sort of thing.

Not since John F. Kennedy faced Richard Nixon, a good-looking man against a five o’clock shadow, has U.S. presidential politics united such constitutionally different beings. One man clings to words, the other to numbers. One educated himself by reading books, the other by scrutinizing balance sheets. On the screen, both personas and images (in the narrow meaning) seem almost identical fakes, like Siamese twins.

I liked Mr. Schieffer’s Obama Bin Laden slip. It was not his fault, however, that it turned into an uninformative and rather anti-intellectual foreign debate. In this state of the race it was predictable that the candiates relied on rhetorics,  repeated soundbites and strayed to domestic economics.

If you stop drinking the Whine of Change and smoking Hopium

As usual Obama played ‘commander-in-chief’ card  – his most memorable (and correct) statement was: here’s one thing I’ve learned as commander in chief.. You’ve got to be clear, both to our allies and our enemies, about where you stand and what you mean. Was he the last 4 years?  To his enemies maybe – with the drone policy. To Europe, certainly not. In any case one should stop congratulating Obama for killing Bin Laden. The Navy Seals killed Bin Laden.

Romney hit more content focused:  attacking me is not an agenda. Attacking me is not talking about how we’re going to deal with the challenges … we can’t kill our way out of this mess…

Romney came across at least as informed and quick study and held his ground. Romney stated that the weak economy and apologetic policies are national security issue that has weakened America’s standing in the world.

Hedge Funds Hot for Ailing Greece’s Debt again. Papanicolaou and his predecessor, Christoforos Sardelis, revealed a contract that helped Greece mask its growing sovereign debt to meet European Union requirements.“In secret deals, intermediaries have the upper hand and use it to squeeze taxpayers,” “The bargaining power is in investment banks’ hands.”

Problem with Obama is, if you stop drinking the Whine of Change and smoking Hopium he has little to show of his first four years than headaches. In foreign policy – especially in the Middle East – he mostly reacted. During the banking crisis November 2008 actually Obama  proped up a financial system that was essentially a dead man walking. Some portrayed his top officials as, in effect, tools of Wall Street . These men and women have “no venality,” Krugman (NYT) hastened to say March 2009 in an interview with NEWSWEEK. But they are suffering from “osmosis,” from simply spending too much time around investment bankers and the like. Details of the administration’s bank-rescue plan  i.e. Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) settled on a financial plan that, in essence, assumes that banks are fundamentally sound and that bankers know what they’re doing. It’s as if the president were determined to confirm the growing perception that he and his economic team are out of touch, that their economic vision is clouded by excessively close ties to Wall Street.” When he had his chance to go after the big banks  March 2009 he didn’t touch them, sacrificing Europe (and the US citizens) to the big money complex. Resolving a systemic financial crisis ever since means now recapitalising weak financial institutions and moving their bad loans from the private to the public sector (vulgo taxpayer). The bail out money is borrowed by private banks increasing the deficit that gives him today the only good grade – from the financal system.  One wonders why.

The election has a serious “B” word hang-up. Barack, Binders, bayonets, Big Bird, Benghazi, Bush, and recently bullshitter:

The attack in Benghazi was by a spontaneous mob in response to some obscure YouTube video.” #Bullshitter

You know who’s a #bullshitter? The guy who repackages his failed first term agenda and promises, no really, I’ll get it done this time.

    Not convinced of both.

If you are satisfied with the next 4 years repeating the previous 4 years, then Obama is your man, if you are serious about something (unknown) not too different choose Romney. Both are in the pockets of Wall Street. The speculative money complex  has a binder full of European and American politicians.

  • Archetypes of the presidential debate 2012 part I

Archetypes of the presidential debate 2012 part I

This US presidential election is a (no-) choice between two similar masks  for the future of America in the the Presidential debate.  But Obama actually  backed off March 2009 when he had some power over the banks and did not touch Wall Street ever since. After that the financial empire became unstoppable and started to attack Europe on its weakest link (Greece) and used subsequently the crisis they induced themselves to take over positions in Europe – essentially taking over Europe.

The other choice is a more open-ended King Archetype  of entitlement due to personal virtues (or more likely personal wealth) who likes to fire people:

The Vice Presidents debate left the impression – if not if a father son conflict – at least between an old cynical and a fresh (likable) Hero. The media too likes this sensationalism and the neck on neck horse race at 48%.

Both President Obama and former Gov. Mitt Romney come with years of history, political and otherwise. One has a history of good rhetoric, and cool if not arrogant attitude. The other has a long history of deception, and ruthless business practices. One event – the media would like us to think it was the first debate – created myth and archetypes. Even the VP debate was influenced by it. Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan’s workout photos were shot late last year, but Time delayed their release to achieve maximum embarrassment: It published them online just hours before the vice presidential debate, to discredit the young Hero (and make him look foolish).

    time_paulryan_theantihero
    time_paulryan_theantihero

There is a long tradition of using archetypical images of male candidates—in most presidential races, the only kind—to illustrate their faults. Think of John Edwards fixing his hair, Michael Dukakis grinning from his perch on a tank,

    Michael_Dukakis_in_tank
    Michael_Dukakis_in_tank

John Kerry windsurfing, and Nixon strolling down the beach in a pair of wingtips.

These photos gained traction because they conformed with the electorate’s unconcisous idea of who these guys were: Edwards was all ego, Dukakis was a softie, Kerry was effete, and Nixon was the kind of unnatural creepy. And the Time photo shoot squares with Ryan’s vision of himself as Wisconsin’s own superhero, living at the peak of emotional and physical control. All the most powerful ideas in history go back to archetypes,” Jung wrote in his book The Structure of the Psyche. “This is particularly true of religious ideas”, but the central concepts of politics, science, philosophy, and ethics are no exception to this rule.

Interested in the US election, I asked myself what are the archetypes used in the American election debate. Especially for the election debates pictures seem to be important, because they have a distinct advantage over the language effects: images transport more quickly archetypes than words – although they do – think of “Yes we can” of the last election. A further key stimulus is the (cross/specific) cultural body language, for which every human being has a genetically or by learning established. C.G. Jung drew up a picture of layers from personal unconscious to collective unconscious. He thinks that in all cultures, at all times and everyone was influenced from the collective unconscious expressed by those archetypes e.g. King. Warrior, Magician, The Great Mother, The Temptress, The Hero, Lover, Serpent, Dragon and many more, manifested by symbols. Those symbols are, according to Jung pictorial or gestural manifestations of archetypes.

These symbols often find themselves in fairy tales, whereof politics is one of them. Jung says psychology was not necessary in the past because all cultures had their rituals and symbols to integrate these archetypes in the conscious living. That seems to be true for Religion, where psychoanalytic sessions replaced the confession. Many psychological problems exist only since there is the psychology before some religions ditched their symbols. However, rituals, the use of symbols, and the experience of the churches were not forgotten by the politics (and the politicians). Jung said also, that totalitarian systems want to replace and also ask for (and receive) religious worship. That was certainly true for Hitler, Mao, and Stalin not to speak of the Roman Caesars or Egyptian Pharos. I believe we move in this direction again also in the secular and so-called democratic states, especially at time of crisis. In today’s debate the Christian Division of good and evil and the symbol of fallen angel Lucifer symbolize the secession of evil from the good. We unconsciously lived this perception. A related feature of archetypes is that, while they shape our perceptions and behaviour, we only become conscious of them indirectly, as they are manifest in particular instances. It is rather like Schopenhauer and Kant’s notion of the inaccessibility of the “thing-in-itself”, upon which Jung drew: you can’t experience archetypes directly but only when they are manifested in symbols and images. Religious believers relate to the archetype of the wise man via the images available to them in their culture (given, for the sake of argument, that wisdom is what Jesus or the Buddha represent).

But what does this mean? Look of the disastrous readings Obama got from the – traditional left leaning – media after the first election debate, almost a image of the fallen angel Lucifer crossed my mind. We often even do not understand why we reacted this way, and we feel guilty even if we are aware of it. At the case of presidential debates, what we see is an image but of the following plot we unaware. In history stories arise and figures emerge which made or broke the bid of presidency. One should interpret this flood of images and, it’s about experience the unconscious and not to interpret, because the unconscious is not fully open to rational analysis, logic, or form in otherwise. The most important task is to understand the dualism of good or evil in us. With other words we have to differentiate between Ego and Persona and recognize our Shadow and our Animus/Anima.How far you might want to follow Jung along this path is up to personal (i.e. cultural) experience. The shadow is a useful concept to many, as that side of our character which is often buried and sometimes, suddenly emerges. The notion of the animus and the anima, say, evident in Taoism.

Seen from Europe, now what is the difference of the two presidential Egos in psychological terms after removing the mask? Answer, Nil.   Mitt Romney ran hard and successfully to the centre, and the president’s pathetic overall performance in the debate mirrored his economic performance the last four years. The same pathetic motivation speeches, but this time with bad bottom line economic figures on Obama’s watch. I have to admit, I liked the rhetoric four years ago, but it has become stale. The magic authority, his wisdom and magical transformation mantra (Yes we can) was not there anymore. Mitt Romney won the debate because he actually at least gave a convincingly impression, that he understands the issues and knows how he’s going to tackle them, not just presenting some empty rhetoric like Obama. Substance won over form, for a change. President Øbama was smart enough not to touch Wall Street the last four years, instead he left his US voters on dire street and supported the neo-con agenda in Europe to get better numbers at home  In foreign affairs, we will see. There Obama has not more to show, than his (correct) drone and terrorism strategy (i.e. Osama Bin Laden). That is not little, but in Europe and the Middle East he did not well and China does not take US (fiscal) policy serious anymore, working on plan B.

This election is, as has been said, a (no-) choice between two similar masks (Persona) who both hide  by a plutocracy of wealth and corporate power; underway for 4 years by President Empty Chair or incoming President Cooperate Raider. Both  means that government would no longer serve the interests of the community but collaborate with their clients to establish a separate set of laws that entitle them to preferential treatment while creating barriers to competition by eliminating opportunities for others.

The King seemed more centrist and plausible at the debate is because he crafted an exceptionally smart and pointed attack against the President’s record, and that stood in stark contrast to the lame deceptions of the Great Mother’s 30-second ads, sound bites and false and mischievous spin if the opposition intention. Mitt played actually quite reasonable and sophisticated the King’s role. For many Americans – including in my family – it was the first time they got a good impression of Mitt, and we will see if he can continue to ride on the white horse as the election approaches. Paul Ryan comes across young and authentic – not a superhero. He has potential. President Øbama was not helpful – if present at all – in Europe’s crises, Mitt could only be improvement but than he needs a steep foreign policy learning curve.

Note October 16, 2012 – to be continued With no podium to hide behind in Tuesday’s debate, the candidates’ style and body language will be in the spotlight. In the shadow always wins the bank.

  • 40 years later Munich Olympia revisited

40 years later Munich Olympia revisited

Today, the 26th of August, on the 40th anniversary of the openings of Olympic Park I biked with my family there to join the local festivities.   Somehow I became a little bit distracted as rather memories of the Black September event than of Olympia 1972 kept coming up.

    This slideshow requires JavaScript.

For many the park is the best what was built there over 100 years and a forgotten vision of the young Federal Republic – according to Christopher Young, in his book “Munich 1972 Olympics in the character of modern Germany.” Or at least back door in a time in which the future was also better – according do the local Comedian Carl Valentin (“Früher war alles besser, sogar die Zukunft”). Alexander Mitscherlich and his wife Frau Margarete Mitscherlich, researchers at the Sigmund Freud Institute in Frankfurt, released 1967 a classic essays of social psychology. On the basis of psychoanalysis and their experience of the Nazi dictatorship, as well as the post-war years under Adenauer they commented on the mental state (“Foundations of collective behavior”) of Germans. Most important was ” the inability to mourn: a German way” is addressed . It seems to be a mass phenomenon  how moral behavior is built .

I can hardly believe that it’s been 40 years since the 1972 Munich Olympics. “Where have you been at the time of opening”, asked my wife. “Travelling in Persia or Afghanistan”, I said ” I was student that time and on the road three months that summer. I came back to Munich mid September when everything was over”. When I watched the “attractions” today, nothing reminded on the sad event.

It was 4:30 in the morning on Sept. 5, 1972, when five terrorists climbed the six-foot six-inch fence surrounding the Olympic Village.

These five were met by three more men who are presumed to have obtained credentials to enter the village. The Palestinians then used stolen keys to enter two apartments being used by the Israeli team at 31 Connollystraße. The burly Weinberg knocked one of the intruders unconscious and stabbed another with a fruit knife before being shot to death. Weightlifter and father of three Yossef Romano, 31, also attacked and wounded one of the intruders before being killed. The terrorists then succeeded in rounding up nine Israelis to hold as hostages.

After 40 years, official documents were released. Very recently the Bavarian public  broadcasting (BR) reported, that ten hours before the bloody Olympics attack in 1972 in Munich, the Munich police had been warned very specifically. According to the news, a German Federal Office sent  a telex with names of five terrorists and pointed out that the Olympic Games were to be attacked. The telex receipt for the warning of the Federal Office (some sort of internal secret service to protect the constitution) supposedly wears the shortcut signature of the then on-duty shift supervisor in the police headquarters of Munich. The police officer was later apparently never heard as witness or officially interrogated. The police shift diary available in the public prosecutor office starts strangely enough 23.50 p.m. – it lacks the page 19 for 7 pm, the time when the telex of constitutional protection office was sent. Already in August 1972 Germany’s Ambassador in Beirut notified his superiors that Palestinians are planning an assassination attempt on the occasion of the Olympic Games. The Foreign Office sent Klaus Kinkel, then Bureau Chief of Interior Minister Hans Dietrich Genscher, the report of the Ambassador with the note, you need to ‘make sure that the matter is known to your Minister and your House and the required action taken’. Four times, authorities were informed of assassination plans, the safety precautions were increased but not significantly. The PLO had significant contacts then with the left terrorists group RAF and between East Germans Minsterium für Staatsicherheit  also significant  connections to West German terrorists existed. The Spiegel claims the planner of the attacks was assisted by German Neo-Nazi Willi Pohl, according to the 40-year-old German intelligence documents. This Spiegel article fails to mention, however, its own reporting of 1981 and 1985. The group of Willi Pohl had via one of its members, Udo Albrecht, proven contacts to the East German secret service (MvS) and the West German secret service (BND). When PLO terrorist Abu Daud arrived in Munich, Albrechts friend Pohl admitted in an interview, that he escorted him and helped him contact a document-counterfeiting operation. Those rumors, that the right-wing groups were involved which died, not surprisingly, very quickly. The very hesitant reaction of the current officials to all the 1972 cover ups would certainly point more  in a longtime shady  direction. A lot of those right culprits were actually East German MfS (Stasi) Agents and /or right wing patsys, like the infamous Berlin police men Kürass, who killed a student during a demonstration, which sparked 1968 the West German youth rebellion.

No speech I heard, no mourning at the festivities reminded on those Israelis who lost their life a few hundred meters ago. That is somewhat surprising, since Germans today get  the  “Kampf gegen Rechts” shoved down their throats by Germans media and well meaning politicians every single day.  “The resistance against Hitler  is all the stronger the longer the Third Reich is gone”. Soon after the fall of the Berlin wall were everywhere in Berlin cautionary graffiti to see: “No Fourth Reich!” “Germany never again!” A generation that fought the “consumerism” and paid homage to Che Guevara, necessarily wanted to prevent a new power – which I am sure would be managed, if she only knew against whom she should move in the fight. The basis of the current militant anti-fascism is the lack of a fascist movement(although Germany becomes more anti-democratic every day). “Never again dictatorship!” the call should be, but this slogan is not so popular by the institutionalized Antifa than todays inexpensive anti-fascism. For this reason, in 2008 even a Hitlers wax figure had to been assassinated in London. There was, however, no trace of those 11 Jewish heroes or memories of their families, but only usual kids entertainment, sport of course, mostly marketing events of “outdoor” companies in thin disguise.

In 1982 I attended a Rolling Stones concert at Olympic Stadium in Munich, that was the last time I was in the stadion. I passed Connollystraße with the bike many times, however, since I used to live during mid-eighties in the parallel street before I moved to the States. Yes, life had moved on, but that memory was even etched in my mind. It was traumatic for most of us in Munich at that time. Sadly, there is still no closure to this Olympic horror story, as the International Olympic Committee refused even in London to acknowledge this tragedy with a moment of silence during an Opening Ceremony. According to the US Media, Palestinians did thank the IOC for ‘Moment of Silence’ Decision, where words such as ”divisiveness” and “racism” are used to explain the decision.

Why is that strange collective behavior, I thought, do they think the wrong people killed the right people or the right people killed the wrong people, or even worse the right people killed the right people? How sad, no of the officials seemed to care in Munich today to remember their names:

Moshe Weinberg (wrestling coach), Yossef Romano (weightlifter), Ze’ev Friedman (weightlifter), Bavid Berger (weightlifter),Yakov Springer (weightlifting judge), Eliezer Halfin (wrestler) Yossef Gutfreund (wrestling referee), Kehat Shorr (shooting coach), Mark Slavin (wrestler), Andre Spitzer (fencing coach), Amitzur Shapira (track coach) and also some Bavarian police men.

One of the helicopters holding the Israelis was blown up by a terrorist grenade. The remaining nine hostages in the second helicopter were shot to death by one of the surviving terrorists.

Reliving the events that took place in Munich and Fürstenfeldbruck will convince anyone that not allowing a moment of silence to honor the victims is a morally questionable decision – in London as I felt there were forgotten too today in Munich.

  • The Archetype of Hermes – the myth of supra-nationality

The Archetype of Hermes – the myth of supra-nationality

Europe is currently on everyone’s lips

Mistrust prevails against the distant unaccountable institutions and its myth of supra-nationality. Europe is scared like in the 1950’s. As many did during the cold war, Europeans today expect salvation for the divided Europe from aliens with UFOs, who shall pave national and cultural differences creating the United States of Europe (USE). Supposedly this USE based on solidarity, centralized power and supranational institutions not accountable to anybody and its size will ensure to prevail in the evil globalized world. What, however, other Europeans dare to ask, have been those ESU beings from the other Star doing behind mirrored facades, usually closed doors and with a highly dubious legitimacy? Unlike of the UFO debate in the 1950s these UFO’s today can be seen by everyone, but there are fascinating parallels between the debate in the 1950s and today regarding the European Union and the Euro. Hans Magnus Enzensberger, a German writer, coined a term: the bureaucratic ‘gentle monster Brussels’. The ESU monster, which stares right at us, is not only a smooth Great Mother, but also the fearsome Great Mother. Who is in control, who can be still trusted? It is an interesting fact that this UFO debate in the United States went hand in hand with the pursuit of the intellectuals in the 50ties. Conservative senators like Joseph McCarthy at that time destroyed everybody who didn’t share the official doctrine like today the European Governments and the EU take staggering actions, every time dissident thoughts to their distorted reality spin are expressed.

    Believe in the omnipotence

It is this form of perceived omnipotence that leads to bullying and manipulating the citizens and the failed Hero acting of the ESU personnel. One of the major founding fathers: Jean Monnet, also inventor of today’s failed bailout policy of a failed European currency, which cost is increasing week-by-week. Sure, there are also clear political struggles and psychological motives behind the Euro debate: the left and the political establishment join in the hope for the blessings of a centralist post-democratic state, because they share belief in the stability of the state as sole power (and on its non accountable priests).  Anything significant beyond the state (such as the individual, the family, the truth, the religion), would challenge the semi-religious ego of the transnational institutions – not only their political clout. Dissent thoughts let today’s EU supporters fear for the long-awaited stability of a nation less and culture less state. That was the reason why the Europe’s leaders and the EU bureaucracy has been trying to reassure the public with obviously wrong assurances. Government assurances, which are obviously wrong arouse always a debate and laid the foundation of today’s distrust in ESU opponents. This triggered even neutral public figures, to believe that conspiracy theories might be plausible. An example is the call of the 250 economic experts in Germany (countered by 17 hired guns including two German lobbyists). This obliges the nation leaders and the ESU personnel even more violently to deny and to lie, which opens the gap between public opinion and published opinion even wider. Welcome to the ESU virtual reality.

    Virtual Reality

Euro supporter on one side of the ditch, are now on a level beyond reality and beyond any logic. Once a social layer of distorted reality was created, this already has disconnected the arguments from the underlying facts. The discussion of “The lazy South”, “The German as oppressors” – called on hidden stereotypes. This exacerbated the conflict, but what is clear to any of the parties now: we are no longer talking about a real thing, but largely of symbols and archetypes: the great mother, the good (or bad) magician), the good (or bad) King – and about shadow, shadows everywhere;  the projection of own undesirable attributes. Shadow of past, such as a former Chairman of Portugal’s Maoists , who promotes without shame “The great leap”, borrowing a term of the biggest man-made disaster which cost about 45 million lives and “The Group of Four” for Europe, counting on the historical void of today’s media. The so-called elites are now UFO believers. Evil crippled dwarfs who swore off love like in Wagner’s Ring gain their Libido through power over others, but are ultimately  just tools of the (tragic, weak and invisible) gods.

    Creating a myth of supra-nationality

Depth psychology and allegories like “The trial” by Kafka show how nasty the fight for the “public opinion” will be. The uncertainty produced by the discussion about the UFO of today caused a strengthening of the Wagnerian mythology, like the expressed slogan: “If the euro fails, so fails Europe”.  No one knows anymore what facts are and what distortions. The discussions with unreliable  facts for and against of all failed rescue attempts created a growing imago of the Monster Europe  and a myth of dragon fighters who bring of the everlasting peace. Like in a real myth the discussion splits between consciousness and unconsciousness of the observer:

    • The conscious of the pragmatic – because of the absurdity of the claims – always remained skeptical and more rationally consider the Euro and supra-nationality a failure and indeed counterproductive.
    • The unconscious of the romantics became magically attracted and absorbed these symbols so deeply, that most of them don’t question the proposed resolution of Europe’s cultural identity and the destruction .

C.G. Jung and the UFO debate

C.G. Jung was one of the first observers, who recognized a symbolic myth in the UFO debate. In 1959, he published a book with the title: “A modern myth.” “Of things seen in the sky”. The book was hardly noticed at that time because it probably did not appeal to the strongly polarized state of mind of adversaries; It was probably also too thoughtful and to objectively. It’s worth to read it to see the parallels to today. C. G. Jung called the entire register of his life’s work at the time: first it seemed to him, “an apparently complicated phenomenon and its possible rational basis has a mental component missing”. What remained unclear to him was the question of “whether a primary perception has been a fantasy in the wake, or whether conversely  the unconscious fantasy was primary and wins over over the consciousness with illusions and visions. A third option, Jung developed and considered  the concept of synchronicities – useful and “random” coincidences between a mental and a physical phenomenon.

    Premonitions social upheavals

C.G. Jung stated interferences of religious visions and events, which always occur during times of great personal or collective fear, threat or social upheavals. Mass anomalies with extreme public interest (and the public dispute), connects events with comprehensive changes of the collective unconscious. C.G. Jung concluded his work with a gloomy idea of the coming cataclysmic end of our world history era. In his remarks, he assumes that the astrological fish age of human civilization into the age of Aquarius is over, which leads to catastrophic upheavals, which evokes the collective psychic effects and collective visions.  Now Europe, or Germany certainly has lost and is lost. Remarkably in this context is, that Jung questions whether a mass phenomenon is a subjective or objective observation and to what degree of credibility the presented facts of experts have. He is was particularly interested in the interactions of  observers and the social collective.

Mercury and Hermes – the media and experts

I would like to further spin these thoughts on the new era analogy and make comparisons between the ESU and the archetype of the magician.  Perhaps the EU phenomenon can be “explained” by Archetypes  in the collective unconscious manifest in symbols. The ambivalence and the apparent “play” of  experts and media is reminiscent of the God “Hermes” and its properties. Money (or gold), is a strong symbol . You may find as strong elements of the Hermes archetype in the current Euro debate . Hermes is the Messenger, Conquerors of borders, Ambassador and intermediary, liar and ingenious intelligence alike. We meet him in mythology, as jester and magician, as God pan, as God of communication and as a the God of liars and thieves. He stands for information and clarity, creating paradox, but also confusion and ambivalence. In its best form, the hermetic mercurial mind is able to realize the paradoxical of being and to endure. The Euro phenomenon is moving on this ambiguous level. On the one hand the evidence exist through news, on the other side remind cheats, tricks on the other side. There is so many evidence and are many arguments and counter-arguments, that a clear solution or explanation of the phenomenon seems not possible anymore. . The Hermes archetype loves just the ambiguity, he will certainly not carry out a spectacular rescue of the Euro crisis on the lawn of the White House – it would be just not his style.

The great mother – and evil

In Europe today, with her lots of weak male leaders, the great mother is omnipresent. For C.G. Jung she sums up on three essential: “nourishing kindness,  orgiastic emotionalism and  darkness of the underworld”. The history of religion shows us the feminine in many facets. It can promise both happiness and unhappiness. The female can have protective, but also had destructive meaning. A well-known example is Gaia, the earth goddess of the Greeks. The Hindu goddess Parvati is wife of Shiva and mother of Ganesha and Karttikeya. Their “dark side”, Kali, embodies the anger. Kali is goddess of destruction and of death, but also of the renewal. .

In this rather depth psychological perspective one thing should be remembered: even if you a really don’t look at the European Union as primary evil it could be very well its real character.  In the context of recent observations, there are constructivist views of reality, which assume that our entire reality is constructed through the collective and the individual consciousness  The phenomenon of the European could be a phenomenon  located on the border between mental and physical reality. The indissoluble borderline between reality and hallucination raises fundamental questions about the structure of reality and serves as an opportunity to challenge reality. It is not a coincidence that Naganos recent interpretation of Wagner’s Ring in Munich picked up the Euro Crisis. Observations of the history and myths show striking structural similarities with the pattern of the UFO and ESU events . C.G. Jung commented (to the UFO event): “We have here an opportunity to see how a legend is created.”

     Many prophets

Events, especially in Marian Apparitions, remind of the string of EU summits: planes descend from the sky or float above the places of pilgrimage  sometimes a light appears to magically save the Euro. Investors – insiders or/and  deceivers (here Hermes shines through again) explain us – Europe must be guarded by the a higher level.

    Meta pattern.

There is also a remarkable parallel between Europe and the Nibelungenlied. The appearance of the evil crippled dwarf who strikingly resembles some politicians, implies the  Euro disaster and Wagner’s (or Tolkien) ring could be one and the same event  only different cultural spectacles. The philosopher Gregory Bateson refers to repetition of similar events as “meta patterns” (such as that of the permanent euro-Summit). The practitioners of Goebbels was aware of meta pattern encoded in culturally specifics and typical patterns. Similar meta pattern are found also in near-death experiences (Greece, Euro, Europe, the world economy, world peace) in the shamanic journeys in newspapers. The question of the meaning and the essence of Europe is full of prophetic undertones and pictures.  The intriguing question arises, what pattern can be found behind the  forces or structures of globalization .

    The search for the hero

The hero on the way of the individuation process leaves the wicked world  to see the supernatural miracles. Therefore the desire of belonging to the ESU – at least for some support – would correspond to an unconscious desire to dedication. Accord to Jung mass phenomena occur especially in personal and collective transition periods. The euro acts as agent of social deconstruction and challenges the way of thinking and patterns  so that new, flowing, supposedly semantically more fruitful thinking can take place. A new EU intellectual study pictures a train without anybody steering on the euro-rail: soon, the Finance Ministers of the euro countries will throw the next billion of the tender to produce steam for the anti-democratic movement. The left intellectual Habermass admits in his essay “On the Constitution of Europe” it may very well be, that common “social and cultural rights” are missing the European structure, but when ideas of a new European Constitution are presented, only mediocre formulations show up.  We see an oscillation between logic reason and utopian hopes for salvation. If Habermas criticizes the “economic view reduction” on European policy at the left, in the same chapter he unmasks the UFO strategy with the disturbing sentence: “Yes, the Lisbon Treaty has gone most of its way already.” The way to where? The Lisbon Treaty provides for no separation of powers, although such are the basis of any democracy. Only a Commission has the sole right to formulate laws and regulations. It is not elected, but  appointed in the backroom. The European Parliament, if it were a parliament, cannot decide on fundamental questions  nor is it one man one vote and more appointed than elected. In the treaty which stands for a failed constitution, measures for the improvement of working conditions and social security are only allowed if they do not affect the competitiveness of the economy. This is the way towards an imperial power on the outside and an antisocial undemocratic way on the inside. Those todays ESU/UFO supporters want a “priority (of) supranational law over national law ” based on the assumption that in a globalized world society Nation State could compete anymore. The ESU supposedly gains power only when the all states join and work together.  “Alians”  like “Lichtgestalten”  want implement silently a better Europe. Every now and then dissidents have stated that this mixture of a institutions and bureaucrats create a “soft monster of Europe”  and makes brutally clear that citizens become less and less involved in decisions. The collective emotions of the left, however, in their love of the Euro subscribe to angle-saxon capitalism world views.

The search for evil (or the guilty party)

It could be,  that the euro is based on pure delusions and the collective unconscious ideas. The  assumption that the ECB, ESM and EFSF are  Trojan spaceships, is the easiest if not the most plausible explanation. The Western world has always been trying tried to block out whole areas of reality (the evil). This search after the evil leads ironically in projections between South and North (and vice versa) of the worst kind.

What is particularly impressive are the many ridiculous “expert studies” or talk shows, in which quite obvious nonsense truth is sold as truth. The euro phenomenon is a psycho physical border event to which the Left even more than the Right subscribe.

     The ring of power

It is not reasonable at this point to come to any definitive conclusion. However, the huge symbolic and psychological meaning makes it very exciting to ask questions at this level and to gain experience in the sinking of the morbid Euro and the abolition of the cultural identity of Europe.
